Full description

About the role and team Core Build is Uber’s centralized build platform team. We develop and operate shared build infrastructure across Uber’s monorepos, including Bazel, build rules, dependency tooling, client-side remote caching and execution, and build/test CI pipelines. Our goal is to make builds fast, reliable, and easy to diagnose for engineers and AI coding agents. We work across three pillars: • Velocity: Reduce build and test feedback times and infrastructure costs through caching, remote execution, parallelism, and build-graph optimization. • Reliability and diagnosability: Improve build success rates, reduce flakiness, and give developers clear feedback when something fails. • Modernization and scale: Modernize toolchains, expand shared infrastructure, and improve test selection and automated diagnosis. Every change to Uber’s Web applications depends on fast, reliable builds and tests. As a Senior Software Engineer on Core Build, you will help migrate Uber’s Web monorepo from its current Jazelle/Yarn setup to native Bazel, enable remote build caching and execution, and operate the build and CI systems that Web engineers depend on. You will own major projects across build rules, dependency management, toolchains, and CI. Working closely with Web Platform and CI Platform, you will improve developer feedback times, build reliability, and infrastructure efficiency—and help prepare Web builds for the growing demands of AI-assisted development and the software factory. What you’ll do • Migrate the Web monorepo to native Bazel, including JavaScript/TypeScript build and test rules, toolchains, and third-party dependency management. • Make builds reproducible and hermetic to enable correct remote build caching and remote execution. • Improve local and CI performance through caching, parallelism, build-graph optimization, and efficient test sharding. • Partner with Web Platform to preserve developer workflows and roll out the migration incrementally with validation and rollback plans. • Improve consistency between local and CI results across builds, tests, lint, type checking, and visual regression checks. • Make failures easier to diagnose through actionable feedback, build telemetry, and systematic reduction of infrastructure failures and test flakiness. • Own Web build reliability alongside the team: define and track SLOs, participate in the Core Build oncall rotation, respond to incidents, and address recurring problems. • Drive Bazel and Web toolchain upgrades, contribute design docs, mentor engineers, and collaborate across teams on shared build infrastructure. Basic Qualifications • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years working on build systems, CI/CD, or developer tooling. • Strong TypeScript and Node.js experience, including debugging and profiling Node processes and build tooling. • Working knowledge of the modern JavaScript toolchain (pnpm/Yarn/npm, Vite, Rspack/webpack, esbuild or similar bundlers) and at least one major web framework, ideally React. • Hands-on experience with a large-scale build system in a monorepo (Bazel, Buck2, Pants, Nx, Turborepo, or similar), including diagnosing slow, flaky, or non-hermetic builds. • Experience building and running CI/CD pipelines (Buildkite, GitHub Actions, or similar) with reproducible, containerized builds from development through production. • A track record of leading technical initiatives that affected many engineers or services. Preferred Qualifications • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 2+ years working on build systems, CI/CD, or developer tooling. • Experience writing Bazel rules or extensions, or operating remote caching or remote execution. • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and service-oriented or distributed systems. • Experience with modern web testing, such as cross-browser, integration, and visual regression testing (e.g., Playwright, Vitest). • Familiarity with web security fundamentals (CORS, CSP, CSRF, XSS) and software supply chain security (dependency auditing, provenance, lockfile integrity). • Experience with GraphQL, gRPC, WebSockets, or Server-Sent Events. • Experience building tooling that supports AI-assisted development workflows. • Open source contributions or maintainership. For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $202,000 per year - USD $224,000 per year. You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
