Respiratory Therapist
Overview
A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a healthcare professional specialized in diagnosing, treating, and caring for patients with respiratory issues. RTs work in various medical environments, including hospitals, clinics, home care, and rehabilitation centers. They are skilled in utilizing equipment such as ventilators, oxygen therapy devices, and other technologies to assist patients experiencing breathing difficulties.
Common Duties and Responsibilities
• Patient Assessment: Evaluate patients with breathing challenges or cardiopulmonary issues by reviewing medical history, conducting physical examinations, and interpreting diagnostic tests like blood gases, chest X-rays, and pulmonary function tests.
• Respiratory Care: Administer treatments aimed at improving breathing, including oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilation, chest physiotherapy, and inhalation therapies such as nebulizer treatments.
• Equipment Management: Set up and monitor respiratory equipment like ventilators, oxygen tanks, CPAP machines, and other devices. Ensure proper functionality and maintenance of all equipment.
• Emergency Response: Act swiftly in emergency situations such as respiratory failure, asthma attacks, or trauma, providing immediate life-saving interventions.
• Patient Education: Educate patients and their families on managing chronic respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, and sleep apnea. Teach proper techniques for using respiratory devices and medications.
• Collaboration: Work alongside doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement comprehensive care plans for patients with respiratory conditions.
• Documentation: Maintain accurate records of patient assessments, treatments, and progress, documenting any changes in the patient’s respiratory condition or treatment plan.

Required Skills
• Proficiency in using respiratory equipment and technology.
• Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology relevant to respiratory care.
• Ability to accurately assess patient conditions and respond effectively to changes in respiratory status.
• Compassionate communication skills to educate patients and their families.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in emergency situations.
Education and Certification
• Education: An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited program.
• Certification: Most states require respiratory therapists to obtain certification. This is typically achieved by passing an exam administered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC), which leads to the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credentials.
Licensing Requirements by State
All states mandate respiratory therapists to be licensed or certified to practice. This generally involves passing the NBRC exams and adhering to state-specific licensure requirements. Some states also offer specialized credentials for areas within respiratory therapy, such as neonatal or pediatric respiratory care.
Work Environment
Respiratory Therapists operate in various healthcare settings, including:
• Hospitals (ICU, emergency rooms, NICUs, etc.)
• Outpatient Clinics

• Long-Term Care Facilities
