ICU Registered Nurse (RN)
Job Description
We are seeking experienced ICU Registered Nurses (RNs) to provide critical inpatient-level nursing care to patients boarding in the Emergency Department who are awaiting transfer to inpatient beds. This role is essential in supporting patient safety, improving throughput, and ensuring continuity of care during periods of high hospital census.
Scheduling Structure
• Night Shift: Sunday night through Thursday night
• Day Shift: Monday through Friday
• 12-hour shifts with a pattern that may include weekdays and/or weeknights based on coverage needs
Patient Care Expectations
As an ICU Boarder RN, you can expect to manage a patient ratio of up to 2:1. Patients may include those who are ventilated, on vasoactive infusions, or have other critical care requirements while they remain in the Emergency Department.
Floating Requirements
This position is specifically for the care of admitted patients located within the Emergency Department. RNs will not have regular ED patient assignments and will remain within the boarder care model. Depending on departmental or organizational needs, RNs may temporarily provide care in other units that align with their clinical competency and skill set.
Experience Requirements
• Recent critical care experience is required
• Competency with ventilators, intravenous drips, and managing high-acuity patients is preferred
• Active RN license
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) certification
Work Environment
The role is situated in a fast-paced Emergency Department setting. Care is provided to admitted patients awaiting inpatient beds, with collaboration among ED physicians, hospitalists, ICU teams, and inpatient services. Support staff will be available based on ED resources.
Key Expectations
• Demonstrated strong inpatient clinical skills
• Ability to work independently in a dynamic environment
• Flexibility and teamwork capabilities
• Clear communication with interdisciplinary teams
• Commitment to ensuring patient safety and delivering quality care
