What Are Locum Tenens Jobs? Locum tenens (Latin for “to hold the place of”) refers to temporary healthcare assignments where fully licensed physicians or APPs step in to fill staffing gaps. These roles can last from a few days to over a year, often with the option to extend. Providers choose locums for many reasons—flexibility, higher pay, less bureaucracy, and the chance to work where and when they want.
