About the Job
A rapidly growing hedge fund is seeking a Counsel to become the second member of its in-house legal team, partnering directly with the General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer.
This is a rare opportunity for an ambitious attorney to join a lean, highly collaborative legal department and play a meaningful role in the continued growth of a sophisticated investment platform. Working directly alongside the GC/CCO, the successful candidate will gain broad exposure across legal, commercial, corporate governance, employment, compensation, and strategic business matters while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.
While the role will initially include meaningful involvement in employment- and people-related legal matters, the Firm is committed to mentoring the successful candidate and providing hands-on experience across a broad range of in-house legal disciplines. This position is ideal for an attorney looking to accelerate an in-house career while helping build a world-class legal function at a high-growth organization.
Responsibilities
Working directly with the General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, the Counsel will provide legal support across a broad range of corporate, commercial, employment, compensation, governance, and strategic business matters.
Key responsibilities include:
• Partner with the GC/CCO on a wide variety of legal and strategic business matters across the Firm.
• Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, employment-related documents, and other corporate contracts.
• Support HR and business leaders on employment, compensation, and workplace matters, with mentorship from the GC/CCO and outside counsel as appropriate.
• Assist with legal issues relating to corporate governance, policies, compliance, and business operations.
• Support compensation and benefits initiatives in partnership with HR and Finance.
• Help develop and refine legal policies, processes, and best practices as the Firm continues to grow.
• Coordinate with outside counsel on specialized legal matters, including employment and immigration issues.
• Provide practical, business-oriented legal advice to stakeholders across the organization.
Qualifications
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school with a strong academic record.
• Admission to and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Approximately 3–7 years of legal experience.
• Experience at a leading law firm strongly preferred with a strong foundation representing hedge funds and/or investment firms; relevant in-house experience within a financial institution, investment manager, or similarly sophisticated environment will also be considered.
• Exposure to employment law, executive compensation, employment agreements, restrictive covenants, or workplace-related legal matters is helpful, but not required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice.
• Strong intellectual curiosity, sound judgment, and a proactive, collaborative approach.
• The ideal candidate is eager to learn, excited to broaden their in-house legal skillset, and motivated by the opportunity to work closely with an experienced General Counsel in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
Why This Opportunity
• Rare opportunity to become the second attorney at a rapidly growing hedge fund.
• Direct mentorship from an experienced General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer.
• Broad exposure across legal, commercial, strategic, and operational matters.
• Meaningful interaction with senior leadership and business partners.
• Opportunity to help build the legal function while accelerating your in-house career.
