Full description
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field (completed by the start date). Demonstrated record of research and first-author publications in CMB cosmology; proficiency in Python and scientific computing, including high-performance computing; strong scientific writing and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively in a large, multi-institution scientific collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications:
Direct experience with CMB-HD simulations, forecasting, and analysis pipelines; familiarity with CMB instrument parameters (noise levels, beams, frequency coverage, detector and readout systematics) and how they affect science sensitivity; experience coordinating multi-author papers; experience mentoring graduate students.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Associate will assist Dr. Neelima Sehgal in the department of Physics and Astronomy. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University. The Postdoctoral Associate will lead the assembly and writing of the CMB-HD instrument design white paper, a comprehensive, quantitative document defining the CMB-HD instrument (telescope optics, detector arrays, cryogenic readout electronics, and systematic error budget) that is a prerequisite for future construction proposals to DOE and NSF. Working closely with the PI and with instrument collaborators at Cornell, SLAC, the University of Pennsylvania, and NIST Boulder, the postdoc will coordinate contributions, translate CMB-HD's science goals into quantitative instrument requirements, and use simulation and forecasting tools to show how design choices affect projected science sensitivity.
The postdoc will also carry out independent research in CMB cosmology related to CMB-HD, publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present at collaboration meetings and conferences, and help mentor graduate students in the research group.
● Coordinate and write the CMB-HD instrument design white paper: define its structure and schedule, draft and edit sections, integrate contributions from instrument collaborators (Cornell, SLAC, UPenn, NIST Boulder), and lead it through collaboration review to public release.
● Science requirements and forecasting: translate CMB-HD science goals into quantitative instrument requirements (noise, resolution, frequency coverage) and run forecasts showing how design choices affect projected science sensitivity.
● Simulations and systematics: extend the CMB-HD sky simulation and analysis pipelines to include instrument effects (beams, noise, readout non-idealities) and develop the systematic error budget for the white paper.
● Dissemination: publish results in peer-reviewed journals, present at collaboration meetings and conferences, and release software and data products publicly.
● Mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the research group and assist with collaboration coordination (meetings, shared documentation).
● Other duties as assigned.
