Full description

An academic health system invites applications from fellowship-trained neurosurgeons with a focus in functional neurosurgery to join a growing academic neurosurgery program in the Southwest. This is an exceptional opportunity for a functional neurosurgeon to establish and lead the development of a functional neurosurgery program serving a large and growing regional population. Both newly trained graduates and experienced surgeons are encouraged to apply. This is a distinctive opportunity for a functional surgeon who is excited by the prospect of building a practice while helping shape the future of neurosurgical care, education, and spine services across an underserved region of the Southwest. The selected candidate will join an established neurosurgical team at a pivotal moment of growth, with strong institutional support, significant investment in facilities and technology, and the opportunity to contribute to the development and early implementation of a new Neurosurgery Residency Program. The neurosurgery program is entering an exciting phase under the leadership of its new Chair. The program benefits from exceptionally supportive hospital and physician leadership characterized by a servant-leadership philosophy, with a strong emphasis on cultivating a healthy, collaborative, and team-oriented culture. The functional neurosurgery opportunity represents a rare chance to establish a program where there is currently significant unmet regional need. There are currently no fellowship-trained functional neurosurgeons serving the region, creating an opportunity for the incoming physician to become a regional resource for patients seeking advanced functional neurosurgical care. The program has an important foundation on which to build. Two movement-disorders neurologists are on the faculty, providing an established source of referrals and an opportunity for close multidisciplinary collaboration. The incoming neurosurgeon will work alongside these neurologists to develop a comprehensive approach to the evaluation and treatment of patients with movement disorders. Institutional support also exists to develop an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, creating additional opportunity to expand the scope of functional and epilepsy-related services as the program develops. The incoming functional neurosurgeon will have significant latitude to help define the clinical direction of the program based on their training, interests, and vision. Rather than stepping into an established service with predefined parameters, this physician will have the opportunity to determine what the program can become and establish a regional destination for functional neurosurgical care. The functional neurosurgeon will also benefit from a highly supportive advanced practice team. APPs take first call, round on patients, and assist in the operating room, providing meaningful clinical support and allowing the neurosurgeon to focus on surgical care, patient relationships, program development, and academic pursuits. The neurosurgery program is supported by advanced surgical and imaging technology that enables a broad and sophisticated scope of practice. Available resources include: • Two second-generation O-Arm imaging systems • Three Medtronic S8 Stealth navigation workstations • Stryker cranial navigation platform • Pentero microscopes • Kinevo system with 5-ALA capability • Jackson tables • 24/7 intraoperative neuromonitoring supported by dedicated neuromonitoring technologists and additional contract support as needed A new 14-bed Neurocritical Care Unit opened in 2025 and is staffed by three neurocritical care physicians and five dedicated APPs, further strengthening the infrastructure available to support complex neurosurgical patients. The selected candidate will receive a faculty appointment and will have the opportunity to participate in medical student education, resident education, mentorship, research, and program development. A particularly exciting component of the opportunity is the development and early implementation of a new Neurosurgery Residency Program. Faculty joining at this stage will have the opportunity to help shape curriculum, teach and mentor residents, and contribute to the culture of a new training program from its earliest stages. The medical education infrastructure is equally impressive. The state-of-the-art medical school includes a 19,500-square-foot anatomical sciences facility, featuring a 7,000-square-foot main academic teaching laboratory. The facility includes multiple gross anatomy laboratories, a surgical/clinical skills (Bio Skills) laboratory, an imaging laboratory, and a clinical anatomical research laboratory. Specialized infrastructure includes preservation tanks, integrated HD video routing and recording for surgical simulations, and C-arm and ultrasound imaging integration. The primary teaching hospital, the region's leading academic medical center, is a 500-bed facility that serves as a major tertiary and quaternary referral center. It was the first hospital in its state to receive a Level I Trauma designation. The hospital combines the capabilities of a major regional referral center with the mission-driven character of a public institution deeply connected to its community. Its clinical strengths include neurosurgery, neurology, stroke care, oncology, pediatrics, cardiology, and critical care. One of the defining strengths of this opportunity is the alignment between the health system and the academic institution. Together, they create an integrated academic health system in which clinical care, education, and research are closely connected. This city offers the scale and amenities of a regional hub with the accessibility and livability of a smaller city. It is a growing educational, commercial, medical, and cultural center with a metropolitan population of more than 200,000. The city offers short commutes, relatively low housing costs, abundant sunshine, strong schools, parks, restaurants, local shopping, and a lively cultural scene. The school's Division I athletics provide year-round energy, while outdoor enthusiasts have access to hiking, fishing, camping, golf, equestrian activities, and seasonal hunting. Beautiful mountains are within a four-hour drive, providing opportunities for skiing, outdoor recreation, and weekend travel.
